Breaking Some Bad News

Today I had to prepare my four-year-old Luke for tomorrow. Ermie, our 17-year-old cat, will go to the doctor. I do not expect her to survive. Luke has understood this day is coming within his limited knowledge.

"Mom, I don't want Ermie to go to the doctor and get a shot."

"I know sweetie. But everything will be okay. Sweetheart, sometimes when kitties are older they start to give us signs that they are failing. Have you ever seen Ermie barf?"

"Yes."

"How many times?"

"Um, a hundred?"

S.H. Market of Farmers, Week Five

Each Friday morning we wake up, get ready, grab some cash, and head down the hill to a lovely little farmers market. While there has been much discussion as to whether this is called Farmer's Market, Farmers' Market, or Farmers Market, I am going to refer to it as the Market of Farmers as to take a passive approach to the matter. (Although I will say that I agree with both Mignon and also my friend, Doris, who is taking the Power to the Farmers approach and calls it the Farmers' Market...although with Doris' approach you leave out the poor craftspeople who do not grow anything, yet slave away creating unique jewelry, as well as the poor macaron lady who is developing mental problems after hours and hours of piping perfect almond meringue beauties...I'm siding with Mignon again. I had better shut up now.)

So anyhow, each week I typically spent about $40 at the Market of Farmers. I'm ashamed to say that a good $14 of that is routinely spent on pastries and at least another $5 is spent on Annie the Baker's heavenly cookies. Leaving only $21 for vegetables isn't very promising. I'll admit that I have actually gained about three pounds since the Market of Farmers has been worked into our weekly routine.

But today? Today I behaved!

My budget was once again the $40. Instead of buying two Sweetie Pies Bakery scones, one almond croissant, and the last two Apple Crisps (those deserve the proper noun capital letters), I skipped the booth entirely and bought one pretzel croissant from the whole grain bread dude for Luke and Aidan for $2.

Yay me!

(I ate 8 cookies last night.)

This is what I got with the bulk of my money:

From left: we have one HUGE bunch of basil ($3), one Armenian cucumber ($1), five lemon cucumbers ($2.60), four pluots ($3.75), one large bunch of some type of purple/red onion ($2), a pound of Bing and Ranier cherries ($7), five figs ($4.50), a bunch of chives ($1.25), four squashies ($3), two green chayote(?) squash ($2), and a bag of mixed mushrooms ($5). Oh, and three honey sticks for $1. I like to get those for my little cougher.

Yeah, I think that's right.

Here is a closeup of the contents of our mushroom bag:

The mushroom lady adores Luke, she has referred to him as "the highlight of her week." That makes a mama feel good. This week she slipped in both a $30/lb morel and porcini. They were smaller than in weeks past. I don't want to rip her off!

Luke was extremely excited to try the fig, which he described as "kind of good." We aren't big fans of mushy fruit, but it was worth a try.

"Ewww, it looks like a brain."

I can't wait to see what we find at next week's market!

He's a Little Nervous Around Wild Dancing

"Can you please be careful to my head? That's how I can get hurt. Can you stop that please?" - Luke's response to me busting out my awesome dance moves.

Okay, okay...

So I'm a little slow with my New Year's resolution...

We are currently in the process of packing up the contents of our first little home and heading north. Packing with a 20-month-old has been quite a headache. The truck comes in less than a week and I will happily resume snapping photos after the majority of our junk is in boxes and our house no longer looks like a pigsty. I'm just cooky like that.

My 2010 is starting Feb. 1. :)
